The Wesleys and Wednesbury

September 1742 Charles Wesley came to Wednesbury and preached at Holloway Bank
Saturday 8th January 1743 John Wesley's first visit to Wednesbury after it was suggested to him by Charles.
  (Records also say the 7th or the 9th!)
Both Charles and John used the large open space at the side of Holloway Bank for their preaching.
As John came into Bridge Street his horse became stuck in the mud at the bottom of the slope.
Just then he noticed a man walking towards him.
"Can you tell  me the house of Mr. Francis Ward?" he asked.
"I am Francis Ward" said the man. "Welcome to Wednesbury. We've been expecting you, Mr. Wesley".
Rioting began in April 1743 and continued throughout the summer
October 1743 The Wednesbury Riot
November 1743 The West Bromwich Riot
January 1744 More Riots
3rd May 1745 John Wesley wrote "The Lord hath stilled the madness of the people"
4th March 1760 The NEW MEETING HOUSE was opened (situated opposite the end of Lloyd Street). John Wesley preached there.
FRANCIS ASBURY attended the Wednesbury Meeting House and was converted there
John Wesley visited Wednesbury 33 times. His last visit was on the 22nd March 1790 when he was in his 87th year.
John Wesley preached many times from the HORSE BLOCK which was then situated in the High Bullen. The Horse Block is now housed in Central Methodist Church, Spring Head, Wednesbury.

4th March 1760 Wednesbury's first Meeting House built
1782 "Birmingham Circuit" formed (before 1782, had been the head of "Staffordshire Circuit" which included Shrewsbury & Nottingham).
1801 Wednesbury Circuit Formed
1812 Chapel build at Spring Head
16th May 1813 Official Opening of Spring Head Chapel
1824 Primitive Methodist Church built in Camps Street
1847 Spring Head School built
1850 Holyhead Road Chapel Built
1850 - 1873 Ridding Lane United Free Church, Elwell Street and Vicarage Road Chapels built
1868 Spring Head Chapel Rebuilt
1932 Spring Head Chapel refurbished - became "Sprinjg Head Mission".  Other Wednesbury Churches became part of the Darlaston Circuit.
1966 Woods Methodist Church built
1968 Five Wednesbury Churches (Camp Street, Ridding Lane, Elwell Street, Vicar Street and Spring Head) came together to become the Central Methodist Church.
1995 Spring Head School Demolished
1995/6 Wesley Centre built6. Opened September 1996.
