The Course: City & Guilds Design and Craft - Stitched Textiles

This two-year course covers a wide range of stitched textile techniques, including patchwork, quilting and applique and a range of finishing techniques to enable a variety of constructed artifacts to be made to a high standard of craft skill. Contemporary and traditional approaches are considered, including hand and machine skills and quick methods. Fabric dyeing and other methods of colouring cloth are explored, allowing a more personal development of work. Design is integral to every aspect of the course; an ongoing sketchbook records the development of skills focusing on the 'design elements' of colour, texture, line, shape and form. These studies lead to resolved designs which inform the design and planning of craft items. Projects include a quilt, a wall hanging, interior furnishings and accessories.

Barbara has been teaching the City & Guilds course for many years now, and has an excellent reputation for inspiring students to create high quality innovative work within the structure of a friendly group. Examples of past and current students work can be seen in the student showcase.

Venue: Studio 39

A new venue for the City & Guilds Design and Craft stitched textiles course in North Hertfordshire. The course is run on Mondays 10am - 3pm. Total course duration is 2 years, in six 10 week terms.
For further information, contact Studio 39 or Barbara directly.

Venue: Missenden Abbey

At Missenden Abbey the course is taken over 12 weekends, 6 weekends per year for two years, but you can take longer if you wish. In between these intensive weekends there is a considerable amount of homework, so self-motivation is a definate asset. The 'Taster' one-off weekend in June (see below) provides a good opportunity to see if this is the course for you.
