Cuttings from the Potting Shed

The aim of this website is to showcase some good and often more unusual hardy plants. If you have been looking regularly at the site you will have noticed that I have not updated it for a while. Time has instead been spent trying to overcome the problems that the winter produced, followed by the fact that it has not rained here since February. Many potted plants have taken a hammering and as a result I have not been able to offer some of the things I had intended to. I will offer spare Hepatica plants in the autumn instead. I have some very choice varieties so get in touch now if you are interested.

Featured Plants

The Featured Plants page will provide information  about their features and cultivation based on over 30 years of experience in growing and showing more unusual species and varieties. From time to time I will offer a selection  of these plants for sale. I do not have a nursery, but as I propagate many unusual plants I would like offer my surplus stock  to other enthusiasts.

Plants for Sale

The plants featured and offered for sale will change through the year as the plants are split, repotted or become dormant. This means I can provide plants at the correct time of year ready for planting, rather than have them waiting  in pots, which does not suit many hardy species. Photographs will show garden plants which I will have available at the appropriate time so you will be able to see exactly what you are buying.

All of the plants will be available in very small numbers, so it will be first come first served. This means you will have to look at my website on a regular basis.

Seed for sale

I can also  offer ephemeral seeds, which are ones ones which have to be sown as soon as they ripen. These include Hepatica, Trollius, and Helleborus

My Growing Conditions

Very dry, very limy ( water and soil ) and in winter it is very cold. I grow everything very hard and we live in the eastern side of the UK exposed to the winter blast on the first slopes the winds meet from from Siberia! Our rainfall is more modest however with less  than 30" per year.

More specialist alpine bulbs

The alpine bulbs are in an alpine house, but it has chicken wire not glass over the door and the vents are never closed. Everything else is outside with no protection. Plants have two choices with me, they live or they die, and  if they need fussing over I am not interested!
