RICHMOND PROJECT Richmond is in the Natal region of South Africa and is close to where our Minister lived before coming to Sheffield. Until the late 1980s many people retired to Richmond as it was a peaceful place. Unrest was seen in the surrounding townships as the various political groups began fighting. Many people were killed and many homes were burnt during this time. As a result people fled their homes and moved to Richmond and lived wherever they could. In Richmond many shops closed and so unemployment also became a problem. The local and national press labelled the area a no-go area after dark. The Christian community of Richmond through this became more united and from the unrest came a vision to support and assist the people of the townships.
The Richmond Project is based in a building leased from a local timber company at a peppercorn rent, so all money raised can be used to fund the project's work. The aim of the project is to teach people skills to support themselves and not to provide a short term solution to a long term problem. Wesley Hall was approached to support the main project venture, a cookery school. We have supported this since November 2000 both financially and through prayer. The Wesley Cookery School opened in January and is staffed by many helpers and two trained staff. The aim is to teach the women basic cookery skills, nutrition and food preparation. Already one women uses the kitchen to make bread which has enabled her to support herself. Currently there are two teaching sessions each week and demand for places is high, the only restraints on opening more are the cost of basic ingredients and time.
The project has many other classes, including basic numeracy and literacy to enable people to have the ability to apply for work in writing, and English language lessons as better paid employment can be found if you can speak English. Knitting and sewing lessons are are the newest classes to commence. In the near future it is hoped to obtain a cash machine so that people can learn how to operate it instead of asking others to do this for them. Want to know more?
