The Churches in Richmond (Natal, South Africa)

RICHMOND METHODIST CHURCH

Built by settlers from Yorkshire in 1852, they worked for Downs Carriage Company across the road. The plot was chosen so that building work could be done during their lunch times.

The chapel seats 60 people and was modernised internally several years ago. It is terribly cold during winter though! The present worshipping congregation consists of about 40 people.

THE RICHMOND PROJECT

Project.jpg (74008 bytes)

Richmond has born the brunt of political upheaval due to a civil war situation since 1988. Political parties used warlords to cause mayhem to win territory by attempting to oust opposition before the 1994 election. Peace has come in the past year. The cost has been the decimation of local business - leading to large-scale closures. Unemployment, homelessness and orphaned children are now the challenge.

The Churches have been involved in the crisis since the start of hostilities by accommodating refugees, providing aid and actively mediating. They have earned the trust of the community and have been approached to help relieve the plight of victims - to be a sign of hope in the future.

A flour company has offered training skills for the two people who will head up training and educating local unemployed in culinary skills and nutrition. Cookers have been donated. We (at Wesley Hall) have been approached to fund the fitting of the kitchen and to assist with funds for the running costs through the year. A feeding scheme for the homeless children is already operating and adult literacy classes are underway.

We at Wesley Hall are privileged to be used by God in this project, which is vital in rebuilding the lives of people who have experienced terror as part of their daily lives for several years.
