WESLEY HALL TRIBE

At the beginning of the year 2000 the Sunday School changed to "TRIBE". This metamorphosis reflected the general trend in society of moving away from learning via instruction alone towards learning via experience. Since then we (the tribal elders and the tribal youngers) have experimented with a few formats to meet the need to offer God worship in a way that allows today's younger people (no matter how much grey hair they happen to have) to do so with a sincerity that is theirs rather than the sincerity from an older generation.

Through the mistakes that we make two things have happened:

1) We have all become more honest with:

i)                    ourselves as individuals and as a group;

ii)                   others in the rest of the church and;

iii)                 ultimately with God.

2) Everyone is becoming freer to contribute something (or not) in the worship we offer God.

TRIBE stands for The Really Interesting Bible Experience. This reveals the purpose of the group ie to experience the teaching of the Bible which of course has got to be really interesting when done openly and honestly with the hope of meeting God.

Our main hope for the future is to become so confident of meeting with God in a special way in our meetings, that we will have the desire and enthusiasm to invite non-believing friends to our worship ALL THE TIME.

COMMUNITY BIBLE STUDY (CBS)

CBS Crookes started in 1996 with 10 people and has gradually grown since then. There are now 50 registered members, about 35 of whom meet on a Friday morning and 15 on a Tuesday evening at Wesley Hall Methodist Church. CBS Crookes is part of CBS UK which is part of CBS International, a non denominational, independent Christian ministry, dedicated to providing accessible, in depth Bible Study in a group setting.

CBS adopts a fourfold method of learning:

Step 1     personal home study using a specially prepared guide with questions to help you find out what the Bible passage says.

Step 2 CBS members discuss their home study answers and share insights in small groups.

Step 3    the whole class comes together to hear a short talk which brings out the applications and challenges that the passage presents.

Step 4 members take home a specially prepared commentary which explains the passage in further detail.

Members who meet on a Friday morning can have their children wonderfully cared for by Anita and her faithful team in the crèche.

There are 6 week and 30 week courses and the programme of studies has so far been:

1996/7: 5 six week courses: James, Ephesians, God’s amazing book, Deuteronomy and 1 John

1997/8: Gospel of Luke

1998/9: Acts of the Apostles

1999/0: The Pentateuch

2000/1: Gospel of John

Although we do publicise the activities of CBS, most people join us through the invitation and enthusiasm of the present members. There is a real enjoyment and commitment within the group which is contagious. We would be delighted if you would like to join us. For more information please contact Jean Booth regarding the Friday morning group or Sarah Withers regarding the Tuesday evening group.
