MATCH REPORT AWAY V BODLE ST 12 JULY 2009
The Bodle Street 9 - A legend in the making!
Match Report:
Before we deal with the finer details of a great cricket match and highlight particular individual performances I wish to raise the following points:
Where the 'F#$k' have all the Sunday players gone? Tim Knight is forgiven as he is nursing an injury!
First we had the debacle at Alfriston, only one player, now Bodle Street only 9? It is embarrasing turning up short, how many of our team complain when the opposition turn up short!!! It is the middle of the summer, Ashes on the TV, everyone talking cricket and we cannot turn out a full side on a Sunday in July? You should be ashamed to call yourselves members of WG.
No doubt when a so called better fixture appears on the Sunday Schedule you will all come running, well get in line, because the new Selection Committee has been formed, you will have better luck playing for Glynde which seems to be the trend these days!
Where's our Sunday Captain? Colin, your team needs you. It is no good hiding behind the sofa at the sound of leather on willow! Do not be frightened, any reference to Captain Slow is James May on Top Gear not you? We love you!
However,I would like to point out I am doing a much better job of the Captaincy!!
Right the match - Tasker losses the toss and gets inserted on a beautiful track, 35 overs per side, 7 overs max per bowler.
Newham and Bailey to open. A slow sensible start, Newham gently snoozing having just driven back from Weymouth that morning. Bailey recieves an inswinging yorker at pace that Wasim Akram would have been proud of that clean bowls him for 0.
E. Chasseud to the crease. (Mr Boring Guaranteed Fifty everytime he bats!) and produces an exciting partnership with Newham, 9 fours and 2 sixes to Chasseud, 4 lives to Newham?
Newham played some exquisite shots but unfortunatly did not connect. Finally Chasseud fell for 79, (deserved a ton) and Newham for an entertaining 38.
Tasker in for a quick swing and look at the clouds for a 10 before being bowled off his pads! I would like to add that both Tasker and Buckle were both seeing the ball to early as a result of Jet Lag having just returned from Kuwait, therefore allowances had to be made.
Goodyear with a fine display of 'slapping' for a quick 23, Brinky another not out with 21, again with some big hitting followed by Buckle 6, bowled by another that did so much too late, Barrett who was given LBW by the skipper much to his disgust for 5. It did keep low, hitting the pads just above the foot dead in line.
Finally, Hall, a lovely pull to mid-wicket for four the clean bowled on the last ball of the 35 overs.
We had our normal bout of contoversey when Hall called 'No-ball' on the left arm opening bowler/skipper who argued the point stating it was impossible as he never bowls no-balls?
Brinky charged the other opening bowler when he returned for his final spell, a tall lanky chap who thought he was really quick???
Smacking him for a couple of fours to his total disgust and questioned what the point of Brinkys actions were or words to that effect. Well the proof was in the pudding!!
Total 206 all out. Bloody Marvellous!
Tea was taken, cold meats, salad etc a wonderful spread. But alas missing that all important cup of tea?
A huge target had been set, but Bodle Street are renowned for chasing and would not give up without a fight.
With a possible 8 bowlers available to the skipper (We have been here before) WG opened with young Hall and the experience of Buckle senior.
Very tidy, Hall with pace and bounce and Buckle swinging both ways, Hall soon grabbing the opening batsman with a straight yorker smashing the stumps out the ground. Hall was taken off after 6 with Buckle finishing his spell after 7. An excellent opening bowling performance. Both with a wicket a piece, Buckle's wicket with an outswinging good length ball, clipping the edge and a fine catch by Bailey. A great return to form after injury.
Barrett came on first change and bowled a lengthy spell of 6 overs, very difficult with only 9 men and the batters hitting out! Unfortunate! But he persevered.
Brinky produced his normal tidy spell and took two wickets clean bowling one and a super catch in the covers by Buckle.
Goodyear, fired up down the hill and let rip with venom. Taking a fine caught and bowled chance.
Then it was time for the mighty spin attack of WG, yes we have such a thing, hardly used because of the devastation they cause to oppositions but it was time.
Newham up the hill, Tasker down the hill with Chasseud replacing Newham and Newham changing ends to take the last over.
Between them a total of 8 overs for 42 runs and 2 wickets. (Top that Mr Panasar?)
Tasker taking a wicket with his second ball of the season with a fine catch by Brinky, Chasseud deserved a second one when another batter went the same way but was dropped.
The other wicket taken in the afternoon was a quickfire run out by Newham to Buckle at the stumps. Newham picking up and firing in from point. Good Cricket!!
Final score 162 for 8 - WG Win.
At one point there was more people smoking on the pitch than in the whole of the village. The beer cans outnumbered the Bodle Street fielders and all played to a constant update of the Cardiff test match via radio from the Umpire and Newham!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A glorious day and a Cricket Match played in the true spirit of WG Gracefully. Everyone and I mean everyone was involved in the game, even the last wicket falling on the last ball of our allotted 35 overs. Everyone bowled, all fielded with passion and enthusiasm and with outstanding results. Well done to you all, yet again it was a pleasure to Captain such a dedicated outfit (I am welling up again!) Another great win!
We are certainly top of the League of Friendly's!!!!!!!!!!
