Fitting a Vice

To fit the sort of vice in the illustration you first determine the shape and size of the cut out in the apron and saw it out.

Then rout or chisel out the recess to take the rear jaw.

Make a packing piece to put under the bench top so that the jaw comes just flush with the top of the bench.

Bolt the vice in position and then fit the false top to the bench .

Take the wood jaws of the vice and screw the back one to the wood either side of the vice.

For the front jaw I drill and countersink holes in the corners of the vice itself and screw the jaw on with 4 wood screws.

The jaws should end up exactly flush with the surface of your hardboard top.
