Man Made Materials

Fortunately with the shortage of solid timber there are now many man made timber products. The clean lines of modern furniture are a direct result of this revolution in the way we use timber.

Plywood

There are many categories of material classified as man made board. plywood was the first man made board to come into common use.

Basically plywood is a sandwich of veneers , usually with an odd number of laminations with each layer having the grain of the wood set a right angles to the previous one. The properties of the cements and the wood giving differing specifications to the finished board. The board is very stable in dimension in its flat directions.. It must be remembered though it will still expand and contract like solid timber in its thickness!

Block board

Block board is constructed of battens of timber veneered each side with one or two veneers.. The first being at right angles to the blocks and the second in the same direction as the blocks. This makes a very sound board but if veneered and polished the blocks will show through in the finish . sometimes you get what is called a 3 ply block board with only one veneer each side. This is usually an inferior material

There are other related boards. lamin board is similar in construction to block board but the core is made of veneer strips on edge. This is a much more reliable material and does not have the problem of the blocks “telegraphing” through a polished surface.

If any reader comes across other constructions of board will they please tell me as I think some of the more obscure materials are no longer made and if they are not I don't intend to cover them here.

Chip Board.

Chip board is made of mechanically produced chips of wood mixed with adhesive and pressed and heated to make a very stable and useful board.
