Match
Report - Sunday 20th October, 2002
Island Boys 5 Inter Kingswood 6.
Both Lol and Billy Turner were sunning themselves on
holiday in some far off sunny climb and with Ross Kirkum
also unavailable, this left us very short on the day.
We had a feeling that Sunday was not going to be
exactly a stroll in the park and so it turned out to be.
The warm up showed what we were up against with five of
their players being six footers.
Island Boys won the toss and kicked off, and then
found themselves 1 -0 down within ten seconds. What a
start. It could not have been better. It quite simply
went right down hill. At half time we were 3 -1 down and
playing abysmally. It wasn`t so much that we had three
good goals scored against us we just gave them away with
very poor marking and lack of concentration.
Half time arrived and so did one of Paul Coulson`s now
famous halftime team talks. To say it had the desired
effect is an understatement. Soon after the re-start
Inter were awarded a penalty when Matt Bowden was fouled
in the area. Up stood Rikki only to see his spot kick
well saved by the keeper. Mick and Teresa now thought
that it was time for a cup of tea and a hotdog and whilst
they were away, Lewis scored two goals to bring us back
on level terms.
Three more goals, one from Craig and two more from
Matt Bowden, to complete his hat trick, saw us take a
deserved 6 - 3 lead. We had suddenly re-discovered that
belief in ourselves, stopped being intimidated by the
opposition and played some excellent football.
Island boys came back into the game strongly during
the last fifteen minutes and managed to pull the score
back to 6 - 5, but thankfully we are made of strong stuff
and managed to hold them off to complete a deserved
victory.
This was a good test of our character and a little
reminder that we certainly will not get everything our
own way in every match we play this season. Hopefully
some of the lessons that we learnt today will put us in
good stead for the rest of the season.
Matt Bowden was awarded the Man of the Match award for
his hat trick, but it was a close decision between him
and Lewis, for his all round contribution.
