1st Mate
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ilexia Hansen, the
first mate, who was on watch when the vessel went ashore, stated
that he was of the opinion that he was well off the land, but
so thick was the snow that the exact whereabouts could not be
ascertained. The vessel was going at half speed when she struck,
but he was afterwards told by a fishermen of Whinnyfold, that
at high tide, due to the breadth of the vessel, it would have
cleared the rocks. However, it was low tide when the casualty
happened.
The first mate found
shelter in the house of Mr William Cay, a fisherman of Whinnyfold,
who he said had treated him very kindly.
The rest of the shipwrecked
sailors were accommodated in the other cottages of the Whinnyfold
fishermen. Few of them could converse in the English language,
with the exception of one German, two Fins, and a few Swedes.
Most of the crew belonged to Denmark.
