Alan became a qualified member of the MPA in May 1991 and of the BIPP in May 1994. He first entered for the MPA Awards in 1994 when he scooped three awards: East Midlands Fashion Photographer of the Year and two Highly Commended Awards in Child Portraiture and Commercial Photography.
