Assembly calls on OFMDFM to Protect Quarry Industry

SDLP Deputy Leader, Patsy McGlone, has welcomed the Assembly’s call to protect the quarry industry, the construction industry and Northern Ireland’s wider economy following the withdrawal of the NI Aggregates Levy Credit Scheme. On Monday 15th November the Assembly unanimously supported an SDLP motion calling on the First and deputy First Ministers “to take all possible steps, including working at Treasury and EU level, to protect the quarry industry, the construction industry and Northern Ireland’s wider economy”.....more

McGlone challenges minister further on DOE inefficiencies

SDLP Stormont Environment Committee Deputy Chair Patsy McGlone challenged the Environment Minister and his senior officials further over inefficiency in the Department of Environment (DOE) that is holding back important legislation.

Mr McGlone was speaking after Environment Minister Edwin Poots was called before the committee on Thursday: “I put it to the minister that the current backlog in the department is unacceptable and would not be tolerated in the private sector and should not be tolerated in the public sector.

McGlone: Translink can’t cope, won’t cope

SDLP Deputy Leader Patsy McGlone has questioned the validity of the Department of Finance’s awarding of Centre of Procurement Expertise (CoPE) status to Translink.  The Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company (NITHC), which includes Translink, was awarded Centre of Procurement Expertise (CoPE) status in 2007 in a process overseen by the Central Procurement Directorate within the Department of Finance and Personnel. That CoPE status was reviewed in 2009 and NITHC, including Translink, retained its CoPE status......more

McGlone Concerned at Impact of Mortgage Interest Relief Cut

SDLP MLA for Mid Ulster, Patsy McGlone, has expressed concern at the potential impact of a reduction in the Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI) scheme. The SMI scheme assists unemployed people receiving benefits with their mortgage interest payments. The scheme was originally calculated mortgage interest at a fixed figure of 6.08%, but in June's emergency budget this was reduced to only 3.63% from October this year. Advice NI has warned that thousands of households could face repossessions due to their inability to keep up with their mortgage interest payments....more

SDLP Deputy Leader Patsy McGlone has demanded that Sinn Féin Water Minister Conor Murphy publishes details of an out of court settlement involving Northern Ireland Water (NIW).  Last year, when the introduction of water charges was postponed, NIW cancelled a £70m contract with Steria to provide bills to its customers.  Steria took NIW to court and a confidential payout has now been agreed...more

McGlone Welcomes Blackpark Waste Water Upgrades

SDLP MLA for Mid Ulster, Patsy McGlone, has welcomed confirmation from NI Water that waste water collection and treatment infrastructure in the Toomebridge and Creagh area is being upgraded following recent flooding. NI Water have said that the refurbishment of the Blackpark Waste water Pumping Station and the laying of a new pumping main to the upgraded Creagh Waste water Treatment Works will be completed in December 2010.....more
