SDLP Rural Affairs Spokesperson Patsy
McGlone MLA reacted to comments from Tory Minister Michael Gove on his plan
for dealing with farming subsidies after Brexit, saying that “we can’t trust
the Brexiteers” to protect our interests.
The Mid Ulster MLA said, “We simply
cannot trust the Brexiteers that they will protect the interests of the
farming community here post Brexit. Why would we as they drag us out of the
EU against our will?
“Leaving the EU risks not only vital
funding for rural farmers but has the potential to undermine food safety
"We don’t view agriculture and the
land here through the lens of the Archers – solely environmental schemes and
walkways for urban dwellers.
“The only way to guarantee the rights
of farmers and to protect our agri-food sector is to ensure that we get the
best deal for our farming community here. That means using our devolved
powers to protect our industry by fighting against the worst consequences of
the British Government's Brexit plans and for our local rural economy.”
