MCGLONE:
DETENTION OF BAHA'I LEADERS IN TEHRAN "SPURIOUS AND BASELESS"
SDLP Mid
Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone has written to the Foreign Ministers in the
Republic and Britain, expressing his concern over the continued detention of
Baha’i leaders in Tehran.
He said: “A number of my constituents who are in the Baha’i community came
to me wishing for some help highlighting the continued imprisonment, without
trial, of leaders of their community in Evin Prison in Tehran.
“I agreed with them and immediately sent letters to Michael Martin and David
Milliband, as well as the Iranian Embassy in London, detailing my concern at
the continuing situation.
“I believe the allegations against Fariba Kamalabadi, Jamaloddin Khanjani,
Afif Naeimi, Saeid Rezaie, Behrouz Tavakkoli, Vahid Tizfahm and Mahvash
Sabet, are spurious and baseless charges that could see a death sentence
given. They have not yet been tried despite the length of time they have
been detained, and have been denied access to their lawyer, Shirin Ebadi.
“I look forward to the release of these people without delay.”
