Patsy McGlone 10th March 2009

Climate Solutions at St Colm’s High School

Staff and pupils in St. Colm’s High School, Draperstown, were honoured when Mr Patsy McGlone, local MLA, attended a question and answer session on climate change and its solutions held by Year 10 pupils on Friday 6th March.

This event was organised by the Science department during the Friends of the Earth’s ‘Shout about Climate Solutions’ Week- 2nd to 6th March 2009. Year 10 pupils produced a foyer display on climate solutions focussing on what we can do as individuals, in our schools and in our communities. They also organised a lunchtime walking club during the week which was well attended by many pupils.

The climax of the week’s activities was the ‘Question and Answer’ session on Friday where Mr McGlone, in his official capacity as Chair of the Environment Committee in Stormont answered the questions set by the hard-hitting panel of eight pupils on the committee’s proposed climate solutions. Questions from the floor were equally challenging but all were impressed with Mr McGlone’s responses.

It was a valuable experience for all. To quote one pupil, Paula Kelly, “It was really good. He (Mr McGlone) gave us great information and we learnt a lot more about climate solutions” while Mr McGlone praised the pupils for their thorough questioning and excellent understanding of the issue.

Speaking afterwards Mr McGlone said,

“I have been thoroughly impressed by the pupils here at St Colm’s and the work they’ve done for this week. They have demonstrated a more complete understanding of the issue of climate change than a few politicians I could mention. Many of their challenging questions about how we, in the Assembly, are addressing this issue would not have been out of place in a Committee discussion.”

Watch out, these could be the local politicians of the future!
