McGlone: Ulster Bank Must Protect Local Banking Services

Speaking after Ulster Bank announced that they will close 11 branches across the North, leading to 40 job losses, SDLP MLA Patsy McGlone has warned that rural communities were being abandoned.

Mr McGlone said, “I am deeply disappointed that Ulster Bank will close so many branches across the North. While I acknowledge the digital advancements and what that means for the way we bank, there are still many people who need to visit their local branch on a daily basis.

“Particularly in rural areas such as Draperstown and Stewartstown in my own constituency, local people will be upset and angry at this announcement.

“Rural areas should be seeing more services delivered locally not fewer. This is another hit on the rural community, we are being abandoned.

“I’ve sought an urgent meeting with Ulster Bank and will be visiting my local branch to speak with managers. The priority must be to protect staff and local services. “
