SDLP MLA for Mid-Ulster, Patsy McGlone
has warned people to be very wary of bogus telephone calls from people
claiming to be from HMRC.
Mr McGlone continued: "I have been
speaking to a number of people over the weekend who have had phone calls
from people claiming to represent HMRC/Inland Revenue. These callers either
leave a message on the answerphone or ask the person who answers that an
amount of tax is now payable to the Inland Revenue and that a call should be
made to a particular telephone number.
"This is a complete scam! The
telephone number is a premium rate number and victims of this con are left
with hefty phone bills.
"Please be wary of these callers and,
if in doubt at all, just end the call promptly.
"People can register not to receive
unsolicited sales or marketing telephone calls at the Telephone Preference
Service on 03450700707 or online at
www.tpsonline.org.uk . This service is free."
