Agri-food critical in Brexit talks

SDLP Agriculture Spokesperson Patsy McGlone MLA has said that Ireland’s Agri-food industry must form a critical element of the Brexit negotiations.

Speaking after the first day of Brexit negotiations, Mr McGlone said: “Ireland’s agri-food industry is a critical economic driver, not just in the North but across the island. The influence of the European Union and the flow of agricultural subsidies has been key to the success of farming and rural communities.

“It’s therefore vital that our agri-food industry is protected and promoted as part of the Brexit negotiations and final settlement.

“Both the DUP and the Conservative party must urgently clarify their position on the future of agricultural subsidies. Only last year British Farming Minister George Eustice said, at a DUP conference, that we must ‘move away from the notion of subsidies’. If that remains a DUP/Conservative position, it will mean bankruptcy for farming businesses across the North.

“This is a critical issue. It must be addressed.”
