SDLP MLA for Mid Ulster, Patsy McGlone,
has warned that delays by Transport NI in maintaining grass verges at
junctions on rural roads are contributing to unsafe driving conditions.
Mr McGlone said, “There has been a
recent increase in the number of constituents contacting my office with
complaints about the state of grass verges at junctions of rural roads.
“They are concerned that the height of
the grass at these junctions is obstructing the view of motorists and
contributing to unsafe driving conditions.
“When alerted to the problem Transport
NI has frequently resorted to an excuse about the lack of funding hidden
behind a computer generated response. But even when the danger has been
acknowledged there have been unacceptable delays before any action is taken
to improve road safety at these sites.
“The continued absence of a Minister
to be held accountable for the lack of action on road maintenance may be a
factor, but it is not an excuse.
“I will continue to press Transport NI
for prompt action on the maintenance of all our rural roads and improving
safety for all road users.”
