McGlone: Civil Rights Campaign demonstrates that today’s political problems are surmountable

The SDLP held its second in a series of events in Dungannon this week to mark next year’s 50th anniversary of the north’s Civil Rights movement. The event was opened by SDLP leader Colum Eastwood, and the panel discussion was lead by former MP Bernadette McAliskey; SDLP co-founder Austin Currie; SDLP civil rights committee chair Bríd Rodgers; Michael McLoughlin, who signed the original permit request for the Dungannon civil rights march; and Fergal McFerran, former NUS-USI president.

Speaking after the well-attended event, SDLP MLA for Mid Ulster, Patsy McGlone, said “The evening served as an important reminder that the current political problems at Stormont are surmountable.

"Austin Currie, Bríd Rodgers, Michael McLoughin and Bernadette McAliskey have reminded us through their own personal experiences of the discrimination, inequalities and financial hardship faced by Catholics in the past. Civil rights is as relevant today as it was fifty years ago.

“We must continue to stand up for all those in our society facing homelessness, the indignity of welfare reform and for families under severe pressure.

“We require political leadership and will urgently to lift people out of poverty and to deliver economic equality.

“We should reflect on the leadership of the Civil Rights movement. It taught us that politics really can change things.”
