SDLP
Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone has welcomed a new team of local party
representatives in Mid Ulster. The local representatives are a new
initiative by the party leader, Alasdair McDonnell. In the Cookstown and
Magherafelt areas there are three new local representatives; Martin Kearney
in Moyola, Maria Cleary-McGuffin in Drum Manor, and Malachy Quinn in
Torrent. They met recently with local SDLP councillors to discuss the work
ahead.
Mr McGlone said, “As part of the process of strengthening the party, we have
been identifying energetic people to take on the role of filling some of the
gaps that have emerged where local party support is not always matched by an
elected representative.
“In the Cookstown and Magherafelt area we have selected three such people
who are keen to represent the SDLP locally, serve their communities and
prepare to fight the next local government elections.
“Martin, Maria and Malachy will work closely with our elected
representatives and will represent the SDLP in areas where we know that the
SDLP vote can be encouraged to come out in greater numbers.
“Only a strong SDLP presence in the Assembly can deliver the kind of change
our society now needs.
“The meeting with our local councillors was an opportunity to discuss the
work ahead and to establish clear lines of communication from grass roots
all the way through to party leadership.
“It is striking that such excellent potential candidates are prepared to
commit themselves to serving their local communities and to the task of
strengthening and building the party to deliver for all.”
