Extract from letter received from Peter Lockwood Jnr. 8.7.2006.

Sarah Ann Bridden b. 1855 was given to Michael Bramley as a wife in settlement of a debt-by her father . (smacks of white slavery ).She soon left Michael Bramley & returned to her former love, Joseph Lockwood- to whom she had 6 children. Michael Bramley would not divorce so all the children were born out of wedlock, they were Ethel, Richard, John Henry, Angelina, Thomas (Peter Lockwood Jnr's Grandfather) & Joseph. Sarah Ann & Joseph attempted to marry in 1888 (bigamously as she was still married to Michael Bramley). Michael (a miner) died in & Sarah Ann & Joseph soon married (legally) She was about 60 yrs old then.The Children were given their mothers married surname plus their natural fathers surname, i.e. Bramley-Lockwood. The Bramley part was dropped at some time. This caused confision when Grandson Joseph tried to find his fathers birth certificate.
