Much of this information regarding John William Clough's decendants was taken from a book he left to his daughter Jessica, which is called 'The Life of Christ'. It was given to Jessica on her 17th birthday. The book originally belonged to Arther W. Galpin, of Burgfield Common, Nr. Reading.

John William was abandond by his mother and left in the care of his Grandparents Stead. Two years later his step brother Charlie was also left with the grandparents. John never saw his mother again,but hisfather Ezra Clough came to the grandparents home when John was about8 years old, and asked him to live with him, but John refused and stayed with his grandparents.

At 10 years of age John William left school when the teacher threw a ruler at him. He refused to pick it up and return it to the teacher, instead he picked up his cap and walked out of school and never returned. Instead he took employment at a local pit as a "Gin driver." ( controlling a pony walking round in a circle grinding corn to feed the underground pit ponies).

Neither John Wm nor his first wife Matilda could read or write.

Family lived at North Parade, Morley, at 1891 census.

John Wm and family were living at 44, Primrose Hill, possibly West Ardsley as 1901 Census

John William & second wife Amy living at 5, Old Mountwood, Ossett, Wakefield. census 1911.

Died of pnuemonia contacted from exposure in trenches, France. Saidto have been surveying for own troop advancment, cut off from own line, found three days later, and taken to Le Treport Hospital, whence he died.

Born Monday 21st May 1888 at 8.15.am.

At 1911 census Joseph, Florence & Daughter Edna lived with Hobson in laws at 11Tremont Terrace, Hunslet Carr, Leeds. He was a coal miner-hewer.
